Accra is one of the six places Black female solo travelers recommended to Lonely Planet in January 2025, and for many of us it is a homecoming trip. The entry rules changed in 2026, so check this list before you book. Checked 3 October 2026.

Entry for US passport holders

  • You need a visa before you fly.

  • Apply online at evisa.immigration.gov.gh (the portal opened 25 May 2026). Standard single entry is listed at $260, with 3 to 5 business days processing; faster options cost more.

  • Yellow fever vaccination card: required for every traveler 9 months and older.

  • Passport valid 6 months beyond arrival, with a blank page for each stamp.

  • Cash limit: $10,000 in or out.

Numbers to save

  • Police: 112, 191 or 18555

  • Ambulance: 193 or 112

  • US Embassy Accra (24/7): +233-30-274-1000

Getting around

  • Ride apps: Uber and Bolt. The US State Department recommends them over street taxis and tro-tros.

  • Plan long road trips for daylight.

Know before you go

  • The US advisory for Ghana is Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution (July 2026). Robbery and carjacking happen, mostly at night and in remote areas.

  • Same-sex activity is illegal in Ghana.
